I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of our customers who will be presenting at our upcoming Ipswitch Innovate 2015 User Summit. I want to put it out there that “IT Pros’ Rock”!
Rob Smura is an example. Rob is a Senior Systems Administrator for Klein Steel in Rochester, NY who told me “I’m not sure my use case is very interesting – it is pretty straight forward network and server monitoring”. When I asked him what he does he said, “If it plugs into a wall and packets flow through it, it is my responsibility”.
Well it turns out that, Klein Steel supplies the nuclear and petrochemical industries with custom fabricated steel components. We’re talking about the structural steel that assures the safe operation of a huge part of our economy and energy needs. There are huge health and safety risks associated with problems at Rob’s shop.
There are some stringent regulations that assure the quality of materials, fabrication methods, testing and even inventory, tracking and delivery. Every piece of the process is automated, factory floor tools are programmed right down to what piece they need to work on next and what cuts need to be made. All the components are inter-networked and interdependent and any problems have both business and potential regulatory impact.
I was fascinated as Rob told me that one of the cutters “uses garnet infused water jets as thin as a pencil tip, at 7 times the speed of sound to cut patterns in the steel.” And how network problems between the robot pickers that put the steel on the cutter bed, and communicate that pick to the ERP system, can result in manual entry of a huge volume of data to fulfill orders and adhere to compliance mandates.
So the true story is that Rob helps his company safeguard our energy and health by continuously monitoring the network and servers that assure on time delivery and regulatory compliance of the steel components used in our nuclear and fossil fuel power plants.
It’s that humble quality combined with total enthusiasm for what they are doing that makes pros like Rob an IT Rockstar.
And be sure to engage with us next month during the Ipswitch Innovate 2015 User Summit, a two-day (October 21-22) online event for IT pros to learn from each other and our product experts.
